Augusta County
We spent a long weekend exploring dog friendly activities in Augusta County, Virginia, but could easily imagine spending an enjoyable two weeks here, or perhaps even an entire lifetime
-
Appomattox County
In Appomattox County, we were either off-grid and having fun outdoors or we were taking in the area’s Civil War history.
-
Amherst County
Don’t make my mistake when you visit Amherst County. Bring your kayak! The good news: we saw 2 waterfalls, hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail and James River Heritage Trail, and visited the Monacan Indian Nation Museum. Added bonus: Mack and his brother Ron had a ball fishing the James River with guide Jeremy Cunningham.

Amelia County
If you are a Civil War history buff, you know that Amelia Courthouse and Sailor’s Creek both played crucial roles at the end of the war. Close to the Courthouse, Amelia County’s Wildlife Management Area is a great place to fish, hike, bike and go kayaking. Plus, it’s free and dog friendly!
-
Alleghany County
Our weekend in Alleghany County consisted of one highlight after another. Seriously…a stunning waterfall, a cave, a historic covered bridge, the Jackson River, and a bike trail from my dreams!
-
Albemarle County
During our weekend in Albemarle County, we spent one day getting away from civilization at the county’s best kept secret, Totier Creek Reservoir Park. The following day we toured the county’s best known landmark, Monticello, and dined in Charlottesville.
-
Accomack County
With its beaches, wild ponies, and Virginia’s only launch site, Chincoteague Island is a hard act to follow. We biked, fished, hiked, and went kayaking. However, seeing an empty beach at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge during the height of tourist season rates as a highlight of the trip.
