We spent the best dog friendly weekend ever in Brunswick County, Virginia sampling Brunswick Stew and exploring Fort Christanna, the Tobacco Heritage Trail, and Lake Gaston.
-
Botetourt County
We found the top 10 dog friendly activities in Botetourt County, including a historical tour, a 200-foot waterfall, and paddling on the James River.
-
Arlington County
We left the dogs at home to visit Arlington National Cemetery, but made it up to them later with a grand tour of Arlington’s dog friendly spots.
-
Appomattox County
In Appomattox County, we were either off-grid and having fun outdoors or we were taking in the area’s Civil War history.
-
Amherst County
Don’t make my mistake when you visit Amherst County. Bring your kayak! The good news: we saw 2 waterfalls, hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail and James River Heritage Trail, and visited the Monacan Indian Nation Museum. Added bonus: Mack and his brother Ron had a ball fishing the James River with guide Jeremy Cunningham.

Amelia County
If you are a Civil War history buff, you know that Amelia Courthouse and Sailor’s Creek both played crucial roles at the end of the war. Close to the Courthouse, Amelia County’s Wildlife Management Area is a great place to fish, hike, bike and go kayaking. Plus, it’s free and dog friendly!

Albemarle County
During our weekend in Albemarle County, we spent one day getting away from civilization at the county’s best kept secret, Totier Creek Reservoir Park. The following day we toured the county’s best known landmark, Monticello, and dined in Charlottesville.

Accomack County
With its beaches, wild ponies, and Virginia’s only launch site, Chincoteague Island is a hard act to follow. We biked, fished, hiked, and went kayaking. However, seeing an empty beach at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge during the height of tourist season rates as a highlight of the trip.
