Our Floyd County Top Nine List for CaNines

Fun Fact: In the 1970s, Floyd attracted hippies and artists who wanted to live close to the land and off the grid.

Q. How dog friendly is Floyd?

A. Floyd’s dog friendliness is off the charts! (We give it 12 paws on a scale of 1 to 10.)

Hey! Look what we found… a blog post that highlights dog friendly stuff in Floyd. What a great idea!!

Amos, Grendel, and Jake, our 4-legged pack members, each selected 3 Floyd favorites to create our Floyd County top nine list for ca-Nines.

❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️

1. Floyd Friday night

Amos loves visiting Floyd on a Friday night.

A scene in Floyd on a Friday night

Here’s what Amos had to say about our Friday night stroll through downtown Floyd:

“The omnipresent musicians brought happiness to my floppy ears and made me want to sit and stay all night long. Plus, it seemed like everyone in the entire town told me what a good boy I am.”

This YouTube video captures the essence of Floyd on a Friday night.

2. Floyd’s Floofers

Jake holds all homeless pets within a special place in his heart. After Jake’s previous human died, Jake found himself in the same situation, and horribly scared and alone. Jake hopes that all of the Floofers at Floyd County Animal Control will find families just like Jake found us.

3. Buffalo Mountain

Buffalo Mountain gets its name from its Buffalo hump.

Grendel said “WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!” to Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve where we hiked all the way to the top.

Before we emBARKed on our adventure, we learned everything we needed to know from Go Hike Virginia.

Are there any entomologists reading this? You might already know that Buffalo Mountain provides the only known home for a species of mealybug.

4. This AirBnb

Grendel loved staying at this AirBnb, which is also a working farm. The hosts definitely know how to stock a house. Grendel especially appreciated the comfy dog beds and tasty dog treats.

The scenic views from the property include a view of Buffalo Mountain from the top of the driveway.

5. Dog Friendly Dining

Jake, who works tirelessly as our pack’s restaurant critic, provided a few comments about his favorite dog friendly dining spots in Floyd.

What we ordered at Outer Space: French Toast and a Buddha-Bowl

“At Outer Space, I enjoyed sampling vegetarian fare whilst in the presence of various alien creatures and a flying saucer. Plus, the staff thought I was a cutie pie.”

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the quirkiest of them all?

That would be Outer Space!

Outer Space, 364 S. Locust St., Floyd

“Did we drive back to the 1950s? DJ’s Drive-in brings the burgers, fries and other goodies out so that our pack could eat in the car, just like the drive-in restaurants of yore. (Sorry about barking at our server. I was very excited.)”

DJ’s Drive In, 701 E. Main St., Floyd

A 4-legged DogTown customer

“A perfecta trifecta: Dogs. Pizza. Live music. Who wouldn’t want to hang out all night at the DogTown Roadhouse?”

6. Historic Rock Churches

As an avid architecture connoisseur, Amos resonated with these structures that literally rock.

See this website for more details about these historic churches:

“The Man Who Moved a Mountain” explains how these churches came to be.

Published in 1970, this book tells the story of Bob Childress who lived on Floyd’s Buffalo Mountain and devoted his life to eradicating the region’s violence and promoting peace, love, and education.

7. Rake’s Mill Pond

Grendel highly recommends a drive on Floyd County’s section of Blue Ridge Parkway. Be sure to stop at Rake’s Mill Pond at mile post 162.4 for leg stretching, tail wagging, and nose work.

8. Mabry Mill

Jake could write an entire blogpost about Mabry Mill, located along the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile post 176.2.

Mabry Mill, c. 1910

“It’s a restored mill, a picturesque setting, an educational experience, and a walk in the park.”

This flume diverts water to the mill.

“We walked all over the grounds and found cool stuff about the history of rural life in Appalachia.”

“I was completely enjoying myself until we encountered a sign with a recipe for homemade soap.

Soap = Baths = No.”

Amos enjoyed an extra long nap in the car while we explored Floyd County’s LOVEworks Trail from North to South.
